What is CMMI?

CMMI — Capability Maturity Model Integration — is a framework for judging how mature an organization's processes are, and improving them. Governments and large enterprises use it as a procurement filter: a Maturity Level rating is third-party evidence that you can deliver predictably.

Precise words, up front. A note on words: strictly speaking, nobody gets “CMMI certified.” Your organization undergoes a formal appraisal conducted by a CMMI Institute-authorized Lead Appraiser, and earns a Maturity Level rating (ML1–ML5). We say “CMMI certification” on this site because that is what buyers type into Google — but every guide below uses the precise terms, because the precise terms are what your contracts will use.

The three pieces

  1. The model. A collection of best practices organized into practice areas (project planning, measurement, configuration management, and more). It describes what mature organizations do — not exactly how you must do it.
  2. The appraisal. A formal evaluation — Benchmark (Class A), Class B, or Class C — conducted by an authorized Lead Appraiser who examines evidence and interviews your people.
  3. The rating. A Maturity Level from ML1 to ML5, published by the CMMI Institute. This is the thing contracts ask for.

Why organizations pursue it

  • Contract eligibility. Many government and defense contracts require or award evaluation credit for ML3+.
  • Proposal credibility. A published rating is third-party proof of process maturity — stronger than self-assertion.
  • Fewer delivery surprises. The practices CMMI rewards (planning, measurement, causal analysis) genuinely reduce overruns and defects.
  • Acquisition and partnership leverage. Mature processes raise valuation confidence in M&A and teaming.

What it is not

CMMI is not a product you buy, not a certificate a consultant prints, and not a security framework. Anyone offering to “sell you CMMI certification” without an appraisal by an authorized Lead Appraiser is selling paper. The rating only counts if it comes from a formal appraisal published by the CMMI Institute.

Is CMMI a certification?

Who runs CMMI?

The CMMI Institute, now part of ISACA. It maintains the model, certifies Lead Appraisers and Instructors, licenses partners, and publishes official appraisal results.
